I expected something different

Seventeen days to surgery (I just noticed that it's July 17th - how ironic). I expected to experience a lot more ups and downs, but so far I feel like I've been pretty level headed about what's coming up. I'm just eager to get the surgery over and to get on with life. I don't quite know what "getting on with life" means at this point, but I'm going to assume that I'll still be on the right side of the dirt.

One of the things this situation has done is to remind me there are still a few things that I need to take care of to prepare for my eventual demise. I've never really thought about my own mortality. I guess my mind still thinks I'm 50*.

Right now, I'm trying to wrap up my Advanced Directive before surgery. I thought I was ready, but my wife raised a valid point - I need to check to make sure the AD deals with end-of-life, and not complications arising from a procedure. Last thing I want is to not be intubated if the procedure (or a complication during the procedure) requires it. Hmm. This stuff gets pretty complicated - all these use cases!

Let the countdown continue. I have my pre-op appointments this Thursday. Never thought I would be spending my summer vacation in Duarte. Heck. Before this year, my only exposure to Duarte was taking the I-210 offramp from the 605 taking my parents to San Manuel (now Yaamava) casino.

* Note: For those of us who think that we're getting old at 65 - here's ispiration that we have a lot to look forward to from this week's Badwater Ultramarathon: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=461893168605705

  1. Thanks for the update and your way with words. So glad to hear you’re sailing along just fine.
When people would ask me how I dealt with cancer or my spouses sudden death I would say: I had two choices, keep going or give up.
    Hugs to you and MarMar!
